The Swansea University Rowing Club (SURC) is situated on the West bank of the River Tawe in Swansea. The club has almost exclusive access to a 3 km stretch of rowable water, including two long straights. It is unknown when the club was founded, but it was re-founded in 2004 by Tim Stickley and has continued to grow since. Rowing with SURC is open to all members of Sports Swansea - the organisation who provide a nominal level of funding and insurance for all university clubs.
The Welsh Boat Race is a key event in the SURC calendar in which Swansea University take on Cardiff University in a side-by-side race on either the River Taff (Cardiff) or River Tawe (Swansea) in the Spring. In 2017 the title was taken by Swansea University Rowing Club, contributing to the first ever Varsity win for the university. This event is the main training focus before the highly anticipated BUCS Regatta and Henley Royal Regatta.
