Swansea University Rowing Club welcomes both experienced and beginner rowers into one of the largest mixed gender club at Swansea University.
We race at a wide variety of events throughout the year, including local races across England and Wales, and national events such as BUCS, Henley Women's and Henley Royal Regatta. The Welsh Boat Race (Swansea Uni vs Cardiff Uni) is highly anticipated and is part of Varsity which in 2016/17 was won by Swansea University. For a full list of race wins head to our news page.
The club is funded by a number of sources including Sports Swansea and Members of the Tawe Phoenix Boat Club, facilitating the purchase of two new Stampfli coxed fours, a Kanghua coxless four/quad, two Janousek pair/doubles and three new set of blades within the last three years.
We also have weekly socials as a club, organised by our Social Secretary. This is the opportunity for members to relax, and get to know the other squads. Socials include 'Sheep & Shepherd', 'Pub Golf' and 'Toga'.
Our training schedule is flexible as we have sole use of our facilities. All training is assigned by the squad captains. See below for example senior and novice training plans.
Please note that training type is dependent on season, and thus the week plans above are just a rough guide to show the level commitment we expect. It may seem like a lot for someone who is new to the sport, however, rowing is an endurance sport so training intensity and consistency must be maintained. Many of our athletes also agree that undertaking training alongside your degree can help you be more efficient with your time and more productive in your working hours.
SURC supports new and experienced athletes who wish to take their rowing to the next level. We have good ties with Welsh Rowing, with some athletes participating in the Welsh Rowing program. We also have some current athletes on the GB Start program as well as athletes attending invite only GB Trials. Current squads include winners of medals at The Scullery, Junior Nat Champs, Nat Schools, Home International Regatta and Henley Women's.
