SURC Captain, Ewan Mortlock, selected to represent Wales in the Commonwealth Beach Sprints

On the 14th June, newly elected captain Ewan Mortlock took to the coast in an attempt to qualify for the Welsh Rowing Commonwealth Beach Sprints team.

The Commonwealth Beach Sprint is a brand new event aimed at bringing even more excitement and risk to a traditional coastal rowing race, with the additional benefit of acting as an event with low barriers of entry for the island communities of the Commonwealth according to former GB Olympian and founder of the event, Guin Batten.

Ewan successfully fended off the competition to gain one of the two spaces available on the Welsh Team, and everyone at Swansea is immensely proud of his success. Ewan began his rowing career back in 2014 as a novice at Swansea and has since gone from strength to strength, proving to be a key athlete within the senior men's squad, and a strong leading figure amongst the rest of the club

A special mention also to SURC member and incoming Social Secretary Charlie Kirk who narrowly missed out on selection. No doubt he'll be back refining his rowing skills in Swansea this year and out fighting for a place next time.
