Swansea Athletes Excel in Coastal Rowing

Despite being used to the sheltered stretch of the Tawe, club members have been finding success on the sea this summer.

Ewan Mortlock has been representing Wales in the Commonwealth Beach Sprints and Guy Elder has taken part in the British Rowing Offshore Championships, both held at Sandbanks, Poole.

Ewan wins Bronze in Commonwealth Beach Sprints

Both have done the club proud and have medals to show for their efforts. As part of the Welsh Quad, Ewan competed against international opposition and beat England to the Bronze Medal position, doing his country and our club proud. The new club President was happy to have been part of this brand-new event and said he “would like to see more stuff like that happening”.

Just two days after Ewan’s medal winning international performance, Guy took a Silver Medal in the National Competition. The British Rowing Offshore Championships is an annual event consisting of heats on the first day over 4km and the following day a 6km final.

In the Southsea double he beat crews from all over the country and some international crews to clinch second place. As a result of this Guy will go on the represent team GB at the World Rowing Coastal Championships.

Squad Manager Steven House turned out to provide help as a boat handler and watch the racing, along with members of Swansea University alumni.
