SURC Senior Women Smash Fundraising Target for 10K Charity Race

On Sunday 16th September, nine of the current Senior Women squad ran the Swansea Bay 10k charity race. In a bid to maintain fitness over the summer, the running challenge was proposed by Senior Women’s Captain, Lucy Swithenbank.

Leading by example, Lucy finished first in the team with an excellent time of 53 mins 13 sec.

As a lover of all things cheesy, she took inspiration from the quote printed on the race day t-shirts: “All you need is the courage to believe in yourself and put one foot in front of the other.” The rest of the team finished around the 1hr mark and talk of the race as being a challenging but unifying experience.

The course itself is a flat, simple loop towards Mumbles and back again. The first leg is taken along the road (closed to traffic) and the return journey is along the waterfront path. The weather progressed from a drizzly mist to pelting horizontal rain, but the women did not let this dampen their spirits!

Despite the awful weather, supporters turned out en masse and showered the women and around 5000 other runners with the extra enthusiasm needed to complete the race.

Amazing support has also been shown in the form of donations from friends and family. £935 has been raised at the time of writing (a whopping 116% of the original target.)

The money raised will be equally shared between Cancer Research UK and Swansea University Rowing Club.
