The Committee 2019/20
A new season means a new committee. This is a short introduction to the clubs 2019/20 committee who are hoping to build on the success of the last years group and create a sustainable future for the club.
President – Charlie Punter
Course: BSc Economics and Finance
The former 2017/18 Senior Men’s Captain Charlie brings a wealth of experience to the committee having rowed for many years. The leadership skills he’s refined during his rowing career will be key in leading the committee and the club on to great things next season. He hopes to bring the Welsh Boat Race title back to Swansea in Swansea University’s centenary year and we can be sure the clubs members will be working towards that goal with him.
Secretary – Catherine Nunn
Course: MSc Business Management and Finance
Catherine is switching roles from Treasurer to Secretary this year as one of only two returning committee members from last year. She proved to us all last year she was able to step up and complete her committee tasks with excellent enthusiasm and energy last year and we’re looking forward to having her back on the committee for next year.
Treasurer – Jess Hilliar
Course: BSc Psychology and Criminology
A fresher senior last year, Jess has taken over from Catherine as Treasurer for next season. Jess made a big positive impact coming straight the Senior Women’s squad as a fresher and is going one step further this year being part of the committee. She’s keen to implement strategies to give the club a financially stable future and we’re lucky to have her in such a key role.
Boatman – Aengus Allen
Couse: BEng Mechanical Engineering
Similar to Charlie, Gus is an experienced rower returning from a year in industry after racing for the Senior Men’s squad the two years prior. He has also previously been on the committee as the Kit & Media officer where he showed he was capable of successfully taking on a role on the committee. His experience with rowing and his engineering knowledge will mean our boats and equipment will be in safe hands this year.
Kit, Media and Alumni Officer – Henry Pearson
Course: BA Human Geography
After his speech at the clubs AGM it was clear Henry has many ideas he wants to bring to the Kit and Media side of his role next year. He’s spent the summer updating the clubs website and social media accounts. As well as started conversations with kit suppliers with which he hopes to offer the club with the best kit possible. It’s also the first time the Alumni officer has been added to the committee, and Henry is looking forward to keeping a strong relationship with our Alumni club, Tawe Pheonix BC.
Social Secretary – Emma
Course: BEng Materials Engineering
Always at the centre of the party and never one to shy away from a couple pints, Emma has big shoes to fill after taking over from Charlie Kirk as the Social Secretary. Although we’re expecting Emma will thrive in this position as she has a lot of ideas to bring to the table when it comes to socials this year.
Senior Men’s Captain – Guy Elder
Course: MSc Mechanical Engineering
Guy Elder, or as we call him here at Swansea “International Athlete Guy Elder” has stepped up to become the captain the Senior Men’s squad. This will be his fourth year rowing for us. Last year was probably one of his most successful years as a rower as he was selected to represent GB at the World Rowing Costal Championships in Canada last October. Hopefully he’ll be able to guide the Senior Men to another Welsh Boat Race win using his international experience.
Senior Women’s Captain – Lucy Swithenbank
Course: Phd Medicine and Health Science
The omnipresent Lucy Swithenbank. Heading into her 8th and what will likely be her final year as an academic at Swansea, Lucy is wanting a big send off by setting high targets heading into this year. Loved by her squad the Senior Women will be backing her up every step of the way as they seek out qualification for Henley Women’s Regatta and a first ever Welsh Boat Race win.
Novice Men’s Captain – James Foster
Course: BEng Mechanical Engineering
Another SURC veteran, James has been a member for three years and heading into his fourth. Although this year he’s turned his head to captaincy. Taking over our Novice Men’s squad for the 2019/20 season James is looking to continue the success the former captains have had with this squad. Being homegrown talent by coming through our novice system itself we hope he has everything it takes to captain the Novice Men to glory.
Novice Women’s Captain – George Wells
Course: BSc Sports and Exercise Science
After being a great help to the Novice Women’s squad last year, George is now taking charge of the squad for the 2019/20 season. He joined the club during the middle of his first year and has shown only love for the club and the sport since. He’s always keen to give a hand to everyone and he’ll have a great impact on the committee this year as well as being a strong leader for the Novice Women to follow. We’re looking forward to see what George and his squad will accomplish this year.
