Welsh Rowing Indoor Championships 2019

This year was the 20th year of the Welsh Rowing Indoor Championships, and we came to Channel View Leisure Centre with one of our biggest parties of athletes ever. 59 of our athletes took to the ergs ready to push themselves to the extremes.
The Women’s Student 2Km event started the day off and so the Senior Women took to the ergs in search of some fast times. Out of the 14 who raced, 11 recorded PB’s and a special mention goes to Amanda Gilbert who smashed her previous PB by an astonishing 25 seconds! A strong start which the rest of the club looked to follow. The Men’s Student 2Km followed with 11 of our Senior Men travelling down to Channel View. Numerous PB’s were set and special mention to Caleb Williams who earned himself a spot on the podium with a 3rd place finishing in a pacey 6:18.9, only 1.7s off 1st.
Once the 2K’s were finished it was the turn of the freshers as they tested themselves in the Fresher 1Km event. First off were the boys, keen to show off the hard work they’ve been putting with Novice Men’s Captain James Foster. Lewis Tutt pulled a big 3:02.3 and came away with 2nd place and a silver medal. After watching all three squads endure the pain of either their 2Km or 1Km race it was the turn of the Novice Women. After three intense races, the novice women came out with a silver medal with Synne Klute only just missing out on 1st by 0.2s. Overall a solid performance from everyone within the squad with many making it within the top 30.
Finally the last race of the day for us was the Welsh Universities Varsity Race. This saw 4 athletes from all 6 Welsh Universities face off in a 1Km race on the Concept 2s. Caleb, Guy, Lucy and Alexis got off to a strong start and held the lead for 750m but couldn’t hold on and finished 1.3s behind eventual winners Cardiff.
Another fun year at the Welsh Rowing Indoor Championships. Thanks to Welsh Rowing and all the volunteers for putting on such a great event, see you next year!
